The only way to completely prevent Herpes infections is to abstain from sexual contact. There are ways however of reducing the risk of infection significantly. First and most importantly, always use a condom when having sex. A latex condom can reduce the risk of infection if it covers the area of infection. Communicate with your sexual partners. Ask any sexual partner whether they have ever had an STD. most people with Herpes do not know they have but people who have had previous STD’s are at higher risk of contracting the herpes virus. Always try to limit the number of sexual partners to a minimum as this will significantly reduce the chance of exposure to the virus. Do not have sex with a person who is currently experiencing an outbreak with open sores. Do not receive oral sex from a person with a cold sore on or near the mouth. Remember though that herpes is a difficult disease to spot as not everyone who has it presents symptoms.
